Melanie McFarland
My interest in sewing began while observing my mother. I learned the basics, while making clothes for myself and others. I sewed quilts from recycled jeans. For college, naturally, I studied fashion at The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM), Los Angeles.
For over 20 years, I worked in the garment industry, where my expertice took me to the Gap and Walt Disney Companies. Here I started a whole technical department from scratch! Many hours of research went into sizing and setting standards for Disney worldwide. I traveled routinely to Asia, including Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Manila, Tokyo, and even London, Istanbul and Egypt.
In 2011, I wrote, “Out of the Box With Easy Blocks,” a colaborative, colorful and artsy manual for making “off the bed” quilts. At the same time, I curated and exhibited art quilts nationally and internationally. I’ve published many original design projects for one of the best-selling national magazines.
